Black Gold
There has been a lot of talk in the wellness community of mineral deficiencies. The modern American diet leaves many people lacking the vital nutrients their bodies need to function properly. Part of this is due to income inequality: many people do not have access to fresh, nutritious foods due to cost or geography. But even for those that can afford the finest foods Whole Foods and Erewhon have to offer, our topsoil has been depleted of key nutrients due to commercial overfarming. This has led many health professionals to recommend adding supplements to a balanced diet. I saw a few TikToks praising the nutritional benefits of shilajit and after doing my own research, I decided to give it a try.
Origin Story
Shilajit (also known in the north of India as salajit, shilajatu, mimie, or mummiyo) is a superfood with ancient origins. Shilajit has been used as part of Ayurveda for centuries as a health and anti-aging supplement. It is traditionally gathered from the Himalayan mountains, although you can also find Andean and Siberian versions. Shilajit is comprised of decomposed plant resin which has been excreted from high mountain ranges. High in fulvic acid, over time it forms an intricate molecular structure encompassing vital trace minerals such as iron, zinc, magnesium, potassium and vitamin B complex. Scientific studies have shown that shilajit can be helpful in slowing cognitive decline (link).

Pure Himalayan Shilajit was kind enough to send me two jars: powder and soft resin. They also sent me two adorable little measuring spoons for portioning out each day’s dose. My first impression after opening the resin was that it was a lot thicker and stickier than I was expecting. It also has a very strong, smoky odor. I decided to use mix mine with hot water. The hot water mixture tastes fairly mild. Its a pretty simple step to add to my routine. I just add extra hot water to my kettle when making my morning matcha and raw cacao drink. I’ve only had it twice, but I do feel a bit more energized after adding it to my routine. I’m not sure if this is a placebo effect or the silajit working its magic.
I would love to compare the powdered version for you all, but I can’t find it for the life of me. I seem to have misplaced it after doing the outdoor photo shoot (>_<) but I’ll update this post if/when I find it and have had a chance to try it.

Hi Azeezah! Thanks for sharing!
Did you know, that you can also mix shilajit with your cacao/coffee or any beverage of your choice?
I hope you really enjoy the product! 😉
I will definitely try that next. Thanks again!
