A recent trending TikTok posted by user Harika Taluri (@rikasays) shows users how to make flaxseed gel from whole flax seeds and water. The caption states: “Natural Botox and major hair growth? Sign me up.”
After having had success with the rosemary oil and aloe vera hair growth hacks that have also been viral on TikTok, I am definitely intrigued. I also just so happen to have a bag of whole flax seeds in my cabinet.
Omega-3s
I use ground flax seed meal in my vegan protein shakes. I add them for protein, fiber, and Omega-3 fatty acids. Flax seeds are a great source of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), which is one of the three Omega-3s. In terms of external use, this Healthline article reports that flaxseed gel supports hair growth by providing nutrients to the hair follicle. Flax seed gel is also great for defining curls, providing lightweight, flexible hold. This mindbodygreen article adds that the presence of Vitamin E helps prevent hair breakage.
As Good As Botox?
The hair growth claims are supported by multiple sources (yippee!). But how about the video’s claims that the gel can give a “natural Botox effect” and will “tighten out any fine lines?” Fatty acid molecules like the ones contained in the gel have hydrophilic ends that aid in moisture retention. So, the moisturizing properties of the gel could help with reducing the appearance of fine lines. Actual Botox works by preventing muscles from moving, thereby relaxing the look of existing fine lines and preventing the formation or deepening of new lines. It is almost impossible for a topical gel to deliver that level of results, but the gel could produce a temporary tightening effect. I wasn’t able to find any articles with evidence supporting long-term skin tightening effects.
Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1/4 cup flax seeds
- 2 1/2 cups water
Boil the flax seeds and the water. Once the mixture has reached a boil, reduce to a simmer while the gel forms. Once a thick gel has formed, turn off the heat and pour the mixture through a sieve while still warm. Put the strained gel into a glass jar and let cool. Once cool, apply to skin and hair. Gel will last about a month with refrigeration.
I can’t wait to try this! Have you made flaxseed gel? Let me know in the comments.
