Meet Michelle: The Powerhouse behind Miami Pilates Company

Meet Michelle: The Powerhouse behind Miami Pilates Company

My interview with Michelle Roques, owner of trending Pilates studio Miami Pilates Company.

Foreward

If you’re in the Miami area and remotely interested in Pilates, you’ve probably seen Miami Pilates Company pop up on your Instagram feed. The studio was launched in 2023 by Michelle Roques, a Downtown Miami resident with a passion for creating an inclusive, high-vibe space for Miamians to come together and enjoy the benefits of Pilates.

I met Michelle early on in my Pilates journey. She was completing her instructor training at the studio in Brickell where I began my Pilates journey. She says she remembers how I would bring my tripod to class to film for TikTok. It’s wild to think how far we have both come!

I recently hosted my first Meet & Greet for my social media community, and Michelle graciously offered to lead us through a Reformer Pilates class in her studio. Click here for a recap video.

1. Tell us about yourself. Where are you from? What is your background? How were you introduced to Pilates?

A: Hi 🙂 I’m Michelle Roques, I was born and raised in the Dominican Republic. After the birth of my children, I discovered Pilates as a means to reconnect with myself, both physically and emotionally. Despite attempting various fitness routines in the past, I struggled with consistency until I found Contemporary Pilates, which captivated me with its dynamic nature. Now, practicing Pilates is not a sacrifice but a daily privilege—a dedicated moment just for myself. Pilates has become part of my daily routine; it’s an exercise I eagerly anticipate each day, knowing that if I miss it, I’ll genuinely feel its absence.

2. What was your career path like before starting Miami Pilates Company? Did you always know you wanted to be a studio owner?

A: Upon graduating from college, I moved to the US to pursue my master’s degree and began my 16 year career in human resources management in the tech industry. While working in this field, I developed a deep passion for Pilates, which I had been practicing for years. Encouraged by my talented instructors, I decided to explore the possibility of becoming a Pilates instructor. What started as a desire to enhance my personal practice evolved into a profound love for teaching. The 500-hour training, with a significant focus on teaching, proved to be an extensive yet incredibly rewarding journey. It turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made and brought immense happiness into my life.

Being raised by an entrepreneur single mom, and with a desire to create my second home, I dreamt of having my own space. This dream became even more significant after becoming a parent. The idea of opening Miami Pilates Company was born out of a desire to share the energy and frequency of the practice with like-minded individuals. Little did I know that my journey from passionate practitioner to studio owner would be so fulfilling and bring so much joy into my life.

3. Are there any skills you acquired while working in Human Resources that carry over to being a studio owner? What are they, and how do they help you now?

A: Working in HR equipped me with the ability to recognize and cultivate talent effectively. This skill has been instrumental in building what I believe to be the most talented, dynamic, and caring team of instructors at Miami Pilates Company. I prioritize creating an environment where feedback flows seamlessly, fostering continuous improvement and innovation.

Our wonderful team of instructors have diversified our offerings by incorporating new classes, blending Pilates with other practices like Ballet, Barre and Yoga. This not only enriches our clients’ experience but also keeps a happy vibe in our studio. There is never a boring class! The skills acquired in HR, such as talent recognition and fostering a culture of continuous improvement, have undoubtedly contributed to the success and vibrancy of our studio.

4. Are there any particular people that inspired you on your Pilates journey? How did they inspire you?

A: All my incredible instructors and my Master Instructor were inspirations for me. One of my instructors was a particular inspiration: Marlene S. Seeing Marlene’s joy and fulfillment throughout the training gave me a glimpse of what was possible for me as well. Her transition from a corporate background to thriving in the Pilates world resonated with me deeply. It was like catching a glimpse of my own potential, and her positive experience fueled my determination to embark on this journey with passion and dedication.

5. What ultimately made you leave your corporate career? What gave you that final push?

A: The decision to leave my corporate career stemmed from a realization during the pandemic that life is finite, and we have the privilege of exploring different paths to find what truly brings us happiness. I recognized my desire to work with people on a deeper level, fostering connections that go beyond the corporate world. Pilates played a transformative role in my life, and I felt a calling to share its benefits with others. This realization gave me the final push to transition from the corporate world to pursuing my passion for Pilates.

In establishing Miami Pilates Company, I was committed to making the practice accessible to everyone. Our approach focuses on affordability, welcoming individuals of all experience levels, ages, genders, and cultural backgrounds. This inclusive environment aligns with my belief that Pilates has the power to positively impact lives, and I want to ensure it’s accessible to as many people as possible.

6: The studio is really fun and bright and your social media presence is really high energy. What is the feeling you’re trying to cultivate for your clients when they visit the studio and engage with your content?

A: I want clients to feel that Miami Pilates Company is more than just a studio—it’s a friendly and vibrant community. We’ve intentionally crafted an environment where mutual support is paramount, fostering a sense of camaraderie and making it easy for clients to build connections and friendships. At our studio, there’s no room for competition or negativity. We’ve eliminated engaging contracts and strive to create a welcoming space free from any ‘mean girls’ dynamics. The fun and bright atmosphere in the studio aligns with our commitment to providing not just a fitness space but a place where everyone feels included, supported, and excited to be a part of our community.

7: What is the most rewarding part of being a studio owner?

A: Witnessing the remarkable progress and strong commitment of our members. Seeing their daily transformations, witnessing the increased happiness, motivation, and refined form is truly mesmerizing. Both our clients and instructors leave the studio with smiles on their faces, and this continuous positive impact on their well-being is what makes being a part of Miami Pilates Company so fulfilling.

8: What is the legacy that you hope to create via Miami Pilates Company? What lessons are you hoping that your children take away from watching you in this role?

A: I find immense joy in the fact that my children see Miami Pilates Company as more than just my workplace; they see it as a shared space, greeting everyone with enthusiasm. Witnessing their natural entrepreneurial spirit, as seen in their mini dog-walking venture last summer, fills me with pride. I believe these experiences will provide them with diverse options in the future.

My aspiration for the legacy of Miami Pilates Company goes beyond geographical boundaries. I envision opening studios in various locations, not just in Miami, but elsewhere, bringing the essence of Miami—the sun, palm trees, and vibrant energy—to different places. Miami has a unique way of infusing positivity and energy. I want to share that feeling through Pilates, creating a brand that transcends locations. I hope my children learn the importance of seizing opportunities, embracing entrepreneurship, and always approaching people with kindness. My dream is for them to witness the beauty of creating spaces where people feel welcomed, supported, and inspired.
