Your First Reformer Pilates Class: What to Know

Your First Reformer Pilates Class: What to Know

Introduction

Hi! My name Azeezah Goodwin. I am a Pilates & wellness influencer on TikTok and Instagram. I started my Pilates journey in March of 2022 and have learned quite a bit after trying a variety of modalities and studios. Below, I’m going to share what you should know to prepare for your first Reformer Pilates class. Think of this as your Beginner’s Reformer Pilates Guide!

What is a Pilates Reformer?

A Pilates Reformer is essentially a machine. It offers resistance when the user applies force via the various straps and pulleys as well as the platform (known as the “carriage”). Springs coiled at varying levels of tension offer additional resistance for the muscles to work against. The Pilates Reformer is designed to help control: 1) the direction of movement, and 2) the amount of resistance. This helps instructors target those “small muscle groups” you often hear about in Pilates classes!

Tips for Your First Reformer Pilates Class

Get Familiar with the Reformer

Knowing the mechanics of the Reformer and some basic terminology upfront will save you a lot of confusion (as well as furtive glances around the studio during class). I would recommend this video guide (“What is a Pilates Reformer?”) as a primer. You can also do a bit of social media stalking to look up the exact model of the reformer you’ll be using in class to be extra-prepared.

Introduce Yourself

I always make a point to introduce myself when I’m trying a new studio. Ideally, an instructor or check-in attendant will be able to see if you’re a new client and help you get to know the studio, but there’s also no harm in making that initial effort yourself! They’ll typically cover:

  • Your experience level
  • A brief explanation of the class objectives (ex: a specific body part focus or what level the class is)
  • A short demonstration of the machine if you’re a newbie

It’s best to get to class a few minutes early to allow time for an introduction and not feel rushed.

Advocate for Yourself

Instructors typically ask if there are any injuries or accommodations that need to be made at the beginning of each class. If for some reason they don’t ask, make sure you inform them of anything going on with your body at the beginning of class. This is important because certain moves can be harmful if you are injured or are in certain stages of pregnancy.

Bring Your Grippy Socks

Different studios have different policies. In general, most Reformer Pilates studios require students to wear socks with little rubbery bits on the bottom to improve contact with the ground and the Reformer (also known as “grippy socks”). If you have grippy socks from Barre classes or other similar disciplines, these will work, as well! If you forget to bring them or can’t pick up any in advance, most studios have socks available for purchase.

The Proper Attire

Pilates outfits are pretty similar to those you’d see in a yoga or barre class. Although there are some subtle differences depending on the “vibe” and aesthetic you’re going for. Opting for form-fitting clothing is a safe bet, as you don’t want extra fabric getting in the way of the movements (or caught in the Reformer). Much of the class takes place lying down during the legwork portion, so keep that in mind in terms of hair styling.

Slow Down

You can always spot a newbie in class by the way they try to speed through the movements. Instructors typically offer some sort of count to key you into how quickly you should be moving. The contraction is when muscles are doing the most work. That’s where you’ll want to spend most of your time.

Connect to Your Breath

Part of what makes Pilates feel so deliciously good is synching up your breath with the movements. It also helps you optimize your energy for those tough moves. In addition to providing a count, most instructors will cue your breath, giving you a sense of when you should inhale and exhale during the movement. Following their instructions will make the workout a lot easier and more pleasant.

Straps on Pegs

One way to impress your instructor is by putting everything on the Reformer in the correct place after you’re done using it at the end of class. This means wiping off and putting away any weights used, placing the straps back on the pegs (not the shoulder rests!) and ensuring that the ropes are not twisted. Place all the springs back onto their respective pegs, as well.

Mindset is Key!

Even for really fit people, Pilates is often a very challenging workout. There will probably be points during the class that make you feel physically and mentally uncomfortable. Start class knowing that you’re supported by your instructor and are surrounded by the positive energy of your classmates. You’ll get through it and be stronger for it!
