Introduction: A Comprehensive Guide For Your Pilates Certification Process

This article is a guide for those looking to become certified in Pilates.

Like many others, I began my Pilates career as a class-taker: someone who enjoyed attending sessions at my favorite studios (almost to the point of addiction). After a high-pressure desk job and mental health challenges caused me to gain a significant amount of weight, Pilates helped me feel safe and at home in my body again for the first time in years.

I started to feel so healthy, vibrant and full of gratitude that I felt called to continue my journey. I currently hold my Mat Pilates Certification from Mimi Yoga in Miami, FL and am in the process of completing my Contemporary Reformer Pilates Certification with Miami Reformer Academy.

Pilates Teacher Training: Graduation Day

This post will share information about the typical considerations behind becoming certified in Pilates (associated costs, types of certifications, job opportunities), as well as potential career paths you may not have considered.

Standardized Pilates Certification Program vs. Studio Certification Program

There are two main paths to certification. The first is signing up for a nationally or internationally-recognized program like STOTT, BASI (Body Arts and Science International) or Balanced Body. The second is opting for one of the many certification programs offered by local studios. Below, we’ll cover the main factors to consider for each path.

Standardized Pilates Certification Program

One of the main draws of opting for an internationally-recognized Pilates certification program is brand recognition. If you plan on making Pilates instruction your primary career, opting for a standardized certification program provides flexibility in the event of a move—whether that move is from state to state, country to country, or simply opting to work at another studio in your city. Programs like STOTT, BASI and Balanced Body ensure that you’ll receive the same education no matter where you complete the program and improve the likelihood of finding employment.

For a list of the top certification programs in the USA, including pricing, visit this article in The Pilates Journal.

Studio Certification Program

Many studios now offer their own training programs. I completed my Mat Pilates certification program through Mimi Yoga, a highly-rated local studio in Miami, FL.

If you have your heart set on working at a particular studio, this can be a great option, as it allows you to network with management. Studio programs are often less expensive and last for a shorter duration compared to the standardized certifications mentioned above.

Some studios also have reciprocity with other local studios, which have agreed to recognize instructors trained by those programs. It’s best to connect with the studio before signing up to ascertain where their certification is accepted.

Pilates Instructor Training Consultation

Regardless of the path you choose toward your certification, becoming Pilates certified is a significant investment of time and resources. Before taking the leap, it is possible to hire a Pilates certification consultant like @whatmojoloves. They can help you navigate the certification process based on your goals, and give you insight in to the current state of the industry. She offers a complimentary preliminary call as well as options for more extended consultations.1

Types of Certifications (Mat Pilates, Classical Reformer, Contemporary Reformer, Etc.)

Congratulations! You’ve begun exploring your certification options. When selecting a potential path to take for certification, it helps to have a sense of what your goals are. Below, we cover the different forms of Pilates and compare the benefits each certification offers.

Mat Pilates

This is perhaps the most common form of Pilates on the market, as it requires little to no equipment. It’s also extremely versatile, allowing practitioners to teach in a variety of locations and contexts.

Despite not requiring equipment, it is still a very challenging and effective workout—arguably more rigorous than Reformer Pilates. Depending on the program, training can last weeks or months. Virtual training options are more plentiful for Mat Pilates than the other formats listed below.

Classical Pilates (Reformer, Chair, Cadillac, Tower, etc.)

Classical Pilates is what most people think of when they think of Pilates. Classical Pilates broadly refers to the original method of physical conditioning developed by Joseph Pilates, focusing on specific sequences of controlled movements designed to improve posture, flexibility, and mind-body awareness. Joseph Pilates invented a series of apparatus and machines —including the Pilates Reformer—to help facilitate precise forms of movement. True Classical Pilates is made up of a “closed book” of moves and postures, including popular moves such as “The Hundreds”, though some studios now incorporate new variations on traditional moves.

When you think of a Classical Pilates studio, images likely spring to mind of various wood-and-leather apparatuses and machines, the most famous of which being the Pilates Reformer. One of the most respected manufacturers of Classical Pilates equipment is Balanced Body. You’ll see their equipment in many Classical Pilates studios.

Classical Pilates training programs are typically the lengthiest and most costly, with training modules grouped by machines/apparatuses and lasting a number of months. Mat Pilates is also a form of Classical Pilates and is typically taught as a separate module during most training programs.

While it’s more common to go through a nationally or internationally-recognized program for Classical Pilates, there are “in house” options offered by studios—a notable example being Club Pilates, which has locations around the country. However, training acquired through a franchise is unlikely to be accepted at an independent studio.

Contemporary Pilates

Contemporary Pilates classes are often taught on the Allegro 2 Reformer by Balanced Body, which is advertised as the “sportier” version of a Pilates Reformer. Pilates purists tend to balk at these sort of certifications and classes, but Contemporary Pilates studios are growing in popularity across the company and often cater to a younger, “fitter” crowd.

Contemporary Pilates classes are typically taught using only the Reformer, with the addition of various props such as weights and stability balls. These are the types of classes that you’re most likely to see on a social media feed.

Pilates “Hybrid” Certification Programs

Due to the popularity of Pilates and its offshoot Lagree, there are a number of Pilates “hybrid” studios gaining popularity around the world that feature their own proprietary machines, methods and equipment. These studios typically offer their own training programs, which are often shorter in duration but franchise-specific, meaning that you will likely not be able to transfer your certification to other studios outside of that brand.

Logistics (Fees, Requirements, Fitness Level)

Certification Tuition Fees

Pilates certification fees vary can widely, depending on the type of program, duration and level of specialization. As a general rule, Reformer-based Pilates programs cost more and last longer than Mat Pilates programs. However, you can expect to spend a minimum of four figures on Mat and Reformer Pilates certification programs.

If you belong to an underrepresented group, studios may offer special scholarships and programs to subsidize or completely offset your tuition fees. It’s worth inquiring if such scholarships are available for your desired program.

Additional Costs

In addition to tuition fees, “hidden costs” may include transportation to and from class for in-person certification programs, equipment/props, and proper attire. For Classical and Contemporary training programs, grip socks are required. Additional “hidden costs” may include extra childcare and/or time off of work, depending on your needs.

Requirements

Certification program requirements vary by program, but typically require a mix of lecture, instruction/class programming, self-study and observation. A basic understanding of anatomy is key for instruction, including key modifications for pregnant and injured students.

What’s Next: Employment Prospects and Beyond

Becoming an Instructor at a Studio

The classic career path for those looking to pursue a career in Pilates is to become an instructor at a studio. As mentioned above, it can be helpful to have a sense of where you would like to work and what type of certification is preferred, so you can tailor your certification plan accordingly. Some studios only accept certain types of certification, while others have reciprocity with other studio-specific certification programs. The easiest and best way to find out is to reach out to studios directly and ask what type of certification is required for employment.

Beyond certification, securing a role at a particularly popular studio can require extra effort. Taking classes at the studio regularly and cultivating positive relationships with the staff there can help. Having an established, local personal brand—which can serve as an indicator that you bring your own audience and can fill classes—is also an attractive selling point.

For studios offering private lessons, having a preexisting client list can also help you secure a role. Oftentimes, instructors can rent a private space for an established fee while they teach their own clients, allowing them to maintain a certain amount of autonomy.

Creating Fitness Content Online

Many Pilates instructors supplement their income—or even rely entirely—on creating and monetizing online content. This content can be accessed via platforms like YouTube, TikTok, or increasingly, an instructor’s own bespoke platform, such as a fitness app.

Many instructors also offer dedicated livestreams or video calls for paying members. This can be a great way to serve a geographically-diverse audience at a more accessible price point. Content can be monetized through programs such as YouTube and TikTok’s monetization programs, through paywalls or a mix of both. Top online Pilates creators—such as Move With Nicole—reportedly earn anywhere from $15,000 to $80,000 per month through ad monetization alone.

Opening a Pilates Studio

Though not required, completing Pilates certification is often the first step for many owners before opening their first studio. Certification allows owners to carefully vet the skills of incoming trainers and step in to teach when necessary.

Starting your own studio can be a fulfilling way of serving the community through movement. Gaby Palmisano—owner of Palmi.Sano.Wellness , a heated Mat Pilates and yoga studio in the Wynwood neighborhood of Miami—opened her own studio soon after completing Pilates teacher training as a way of marrying her passions for exercise, community and the arts:

From a young age, movement has always been a part of my life — from athletics and dance to Circus arts— so opening my own Pilates and movement studio felt like a natural expression of that passion. I’ve always dreamed of being a business owner, and creating a space for wellness, creativity, and community thrive allowed me to merge that lifelong love of movement with my deep appreciation for art.

My interest extended into studio arts, cinematography and visual storytelling, and I want the studio to reflect that — not just as a place to work out, but as a thoughtfully designed sanctuary that inspires creativity and connection.

My favorite part of the journey is wearing many hats! I’m the girl answering the phone, running operations, teaching, cleaning, etc… this is my baby and I want to be a present owner and remain involved. There’s nothing more rewarding than watching our community grow stronger together, both on and off the mat. ”

—Gaby Palmisano, Palmi.Sano.Wellness

Owning your own studio is also a great way to help increase representation and accessibility. We interviewed Michelle Roques—owner of Miami Pilates Company in Downtown Miami—for La Vie de Zee on her desire to create a welcoming space for women of color in the community. Michelle was born and raised in the Dominican Republic and wanted to foster a warm, vibrant and diverse environment like the one she experienced growing up. Teaching From Home

Some trainers teach from their homes—either virtually or in person. Having a dedicated onsite structure or room functioning as a studio is a popular way to create income flexibility for many instructors. Just be sure to look up tax designation and licensing requirements in your state.

Launching Your Own Certification Program

After you’ve become an accomplished instructor in your own right, the next step could be establishing your own certification program. Mat Pilates instructor and influencer Starr Hawkins (@babymommafit) developed her own Teacher Training program in partnership with Mimi Yoga in 2024:

Building this certification was wild because I wanted it to be everything I’d wished I’d had when I started. It’s not just the Pilates moves—its the principals, the history, the anatomy, plus the real stuff that makes you stand out: cuing, playlists, social media, how to command a room.

The hardest part was figuring out the flow. Every group has a different vibe and different things they get stuck on, so I had to create something that works no matter who’s in front of me. At the end of the day, I put all of me into [the training manual]. No gatekeeping, just the exact formula that’s made me successful.”

—Starr Hawkins

Launching a certification program can be both lucrative and fulfilling. In addition to creating income stability, you can nurture the next generation of Pilates instructors:

What I want with [my] program is simple: to help people create their own lane. My ideal student is that instructor who wants to make a difference and build their own brand, not just be another class on the schedule. You don’t even need fitness experience, just the drive to learn and put in the work. Fitness changed everything for me. It got me sober, it got me out of debt, it helped me buy a house, it gave me a life I never thought I’d have. If you’re passionate, this is your sign you can do it, too.”

—Starr Hawkins

Hosting Pilates Events

Hosting Pilates “Pop Up” events can be a great way to cultivate community and help studios and other venues create buzz around their offerings. For those interested in hosting their own events, I’ve compiled a few tips that have helped me in hosting my own events over the years:

Furthering Your Own Practice

Even if you never decide to teach professionally, receiving your certification can be a great way to further your own practice. While I may teach at a studio at some point, for now, I teach at my Pilates With Zee events and share content online exclusively. My personal practice has greatly improved thanks to my certification programs. I’ve also given private lessons to close friends and family members and I plan on instructing my partner and future children when the time comes.

Your Personal Brand

Beyond being a competent instructor, having a special value add for your community is an important way to stand out in the marketplace and attract your ideal audience. Your personal brand is about how you make people feel through your work. This can be communicated via the colors you wear, your teaching style, your playlists, the body parts you focus on and even your background beyond the studio. Social media is a great opportunity for storytelling, allowing you to share the “why” behind pursuing your certification and how you hope to use it to help others. We all have unique stories. Giving others access into how Pilates has changed your life can help them visualize themselves in the “Pilates world,” too.

Having a strong personal brand can also help you attract opportunities beyond the studio, from brand partnerships to teaching at special events. Don’t be afraid to show your personality and tell your unique story.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What sort of fitness level do I need to complete teacher training?
    • This will vary depending on the program, but the tagline “Pilates is for every body” is true! Pilates can benefit every body type and be performed by all body types. It’s ok to need certain modifications, even as an instructor!
  2. What can I expect in terms of finding employment after completing my training program?
    • Before you invest in your training program, get a sense of what the local market in your city/town is like. Ask around at studios to see if they’re hiring. You could also have a “hidden client base” among your existing network—friends and family members that would love to be trained by someone they trust, love and respect. Start sharing your intention via your in-person and online networks and you’ll start to get little “nibbles” back from the Universe.
  3. How much do Pilates instructors earn?
    • This varies by city, certification type, studio and private versus group classes, etc. To get a sense of what instructors across the country are self-reporting in terms of earnings, I suggest visiting the Pilates Reddit page.
  4. Will I need insurance?
    • Yes! It’s a good idea to have professional liability insurance, especially if you plan on hosting events or practicing outside of a studio (studios typically have their own insurance).
  5. Can I be a part-time instructor?
    • A increasing number of instructors teach at studios in addition to running a business or working at a corporate job, especially positions that allow for remote work. Balancing both can be a way to enjoy the best of both worlds.

Conclusion

Regardless of the type of program you select, becoming a Pilates instructor is a beautiful way to invest in yourself and your community. Congratulations on taking the first step towards a fulfilling next chapter.
